C O M Q: What show or event from one of your first SXSWs was the most memorable/favorite? 2011: First time I saw Grimes was on the back patio of Headhunt- ers at the Mint Records BBQ. She was a timid performer with a cool sound. - Mar Sellars: Mar On Music (Toronto, Canada) In 1987, I had my first two show- cases on the same night--Ballad Shambles at the old Antone's on Guadalupe, then I had to rush to play at the Continental Club with Poison 13. This pretty much set the pattern for my SXSW experiences, scurrying from club to club. - Bill Anderson, Church- wood (Anderson estimates that since 1987, he has played in 17 different bands at SXSW) My most outstanding moment of any SXSW was the keynote address by Johnny Cash in 1994, my first SX. In other words I was spoiled from day one, but I've been amazed by many a keynote and show over the last 20+ years. - Nelson Wells: Founder & CEO, Team Clermont 2010: Balkan Beat Box in the Sat- urday night 1am slot. The place was packed. No one wanted them to stop. The club turned the lights on, and BBB still kept going. - Garrett Baker: Manager, FlipSwitchPR and StoryAmp In 2008, a text around midnight just said "Meet me and Ra Ra Riot over at Maggie Maes at 1am." I walked to the roof and caught the most heartbreak- ingly beautiful set from Bon Iver 3 0 Y E A R S O F S X S W MOMENTS OF MAGIC whom I'd never heard. Now I'm a lifelong fan. - Seth Kallen: This Fiction Management A tie between Joe Ely at La Zona Rosa and The Fleshtones at Lib- erty Lunch. I think it was 1991.- Roggie Baer: Owner, RajiWorld Productions In 2007, we launched the Flash- FWD Awards, which spotlighted Music Tech, during convergence day. I met so many new folks. - Jesse Kirshbaum: CEO, Nue Agency I believe it was 2006. Classic PBR/BBQ/goat running around free/Austin situation. - Juval Haring: Singer/guitarist, Vaadat Charigim (Tel Aviv, Israel) 2009: Seeing Jane's Addiction and then seeing DEVO the next night. - Julia Willinger: SVP of A&R, Mom and Pop Music 2006, absolutely done, and a friend forced me to see this band at Emo's. Had never heard of them before, but jumping up and down by their second song, I was glad to have made the acquaintance of Gogol Bordello. - Evelyn Sieber: Reeperbahn Festival (Hamburg, Germany) The first SXSW show I really got excited about was the Wind- breakers in either '89 or '90. - Greg Ellis: Owner/Manager of Groovers' Paradise Record Store (Austin) 1 2 S X S W o r l d | M U S I C M A R C H 2 0 1 6 | S X S W. C O M "The magic of SXSW is in the moment and some of the most incredible experiences are never planned." – Paul Cashmere, Noise11.com We publish this issue of SXSWorld in the midst of the 30th SXSW. To commemorate this occasion, we sent a three- question survey to a number of past and present SXSW participants to share their memories and expectations: 2 0 1 0 2 0 1 2 2 0 1 1 Little Dragon J E A N N E W I L K I N S O N Motörhead VA L E R I E F E R M I N King of Luck World Premiere M A R Y S L E D D Bruce Springsteen M I C H A E L B U C K N E R / G E T T Y I M A G E S L A U R A L E A N A L L E Sharon Jones Ed Sheeran R O B E R T S A N T O S
