Launched in 2011 as a collaborative project with UK Trade & Investment, the SXSW Platinum Connection takes advantage of the extraordinary range of companies attending SXSW to provide personalized meeting opportunities for international business people. In 2012, 30 British companies received hand-picked meeting schedules with 119 U.S. and international companies such as HBO, LinkedIn, Fox, Maker Studios, Nordstrom, Eventbrite, Black Entertainment Television (BET), Google, Sony, Clear Channel and Mitchell Silverburg & Knupp. U.K. companies that have participated in past Platinum Connections sessions include the BBC, Warp Publishing, ITV, Transmedia Storyteller and Digital Shoreditch. Filmtrip founder Gawain Morrison credited the Platinum Connection with providing the introductions that led to an entirely new product development, Sensum, a mobile platform that captures and displays emotional and survey responses to media. Former Clifton Cowley executive Tom Wood saw the Platinum Connection as a key factor in his successful launch of Kudan, a new mobile augmented digital reality agency. Sally Hodgson of Pipoca Pictures made connections that resulted in the U.S. release on VOD, Hulu and iTunes of the documentary film, Sound it Out. "The Platinum Connection supplies a platform to place U.K. innovators at a competitive advantage to others at the event. The service has become the flagship of UK Trade & Investment's support for U.K. businesses at SXSW," said Philippa McEvoy, UKTI Events Manager. COPYCATS Media worked closely with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis to create a custom "Gator box" for the duo's recently released album, The Heist. It was the highest selling independent release of 2012, peaking at #2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. This year, 40 British companies will participate in SXSW Platinum Connection. The meetings will be held daily, March 10-13, in a dedicated section of the British stand in the SXSW Trade Show. AirTurn recently announced a new collaboration with Positive Grid, developers of the iPad app JamUp Pro XT. Now guitar players can control virtual stomp boxes, effects, amps and presets wirelessly with the four-pedal and two-pedal versions of the AirTurn BT-105. MAXON Computer, a leading developer of 3D animation and visualization software, announced its "Global Training Initiatives" program for certified MAXON product training. The MAXON ATC program offers various forms of authorization for trainers and additional training centers with different areas of specialization. 6 For this first time, Singapore will be doing a smaller version of the U.K. program at SXSW 2013 with 10 participating Singaporean companies. SXSW organizers expect to expand the service to other national stands in future years. Apogee Electronics' professional USB audio interface, Quartet, now makes a direct digital connection to iPad for creating professional multi-track recordings. SXSWORLD / FEBRUARY 2013 Gigg.com just released a new app for both iPhone and Droid with a big New Year's Eve launch party that was free for everyone who had downloaded the app. The Austin Chamber of Commerce is supporting the growth of the regional clean-tech economy and the creation of new jobs through its economic development program, Opportunity Austin. Austin is ranked as one of the 10 largest clean-tech clusters by Clean Edge.
