14 SXSW 2018 Stage Manager Handbook SOUND CHECKS Usually, the first band of the evening gets a short sound check when they load-in at 6pm to give the sound engineer an opportunity to tune the PA. If you have requests for sound checks other than the first band of the night please talk to your APM who will work with Production for approval. If there are any special circumstances you will be made aware by SXSW staff. Each band will receive a line check just prior to their scheduled performance. SET TIMES & CHANGEOVERS One of the most important things that you'll do as a stage manager is keep showcases running on time. It's vital that the artists begin and end their set on time. Most showcases run on the hour with 40 minute sets and 20 minute changeovers. This isn't always the case so check the SM Advancement Tool for the most updated set times. Pre-Festival • Let the artists know how important it is they start and end on time • Stress their start and end times so they are aware way in advance to prevent on-site issues • Begin planning how to change over between sets efficiently by engaging artists in backline discussions early Day of Show • Ensure next artist/band is ready and close by for set change • Make sure artists and stage crew are prepared for the change over, communicate the plan early so that all stage crew are aware • Organize backline for easy and efficient transitions • Provide all artists with a signal so they know when it's 5 min, 4 min, 3 min etc. Before the end of their set • Bring any stage plots to the venue for your sound engineer and your stage crew.
