The next year the venue had a portable shed for the bands. The craziest action was usually in the hotel after a par- ticularly scorching set. "I remember one party in par- ticular," says Davis. "It was at (Mojo's manager) Bul- lethead's suite at the Hyatt. There were about 70 people in there, watching the leg-wrestling, and it spilled out all down the hall. Everybody was drunk as hell and rowdy." A call came to the room from Dash's tour manager that a SWAT team had arrived at the hotel, and everybody thought it was a joke. "It was too crowded anyway, so we decided to leave and as we were going down in one of the glass elevators, we could see the SWAT team coming up in the next one." Talk about a buzzkill. "Even if we didn't get a new deal or a new manager or something, we always looked forward to SXSW for the party," says Davis. "Just catching up with ev- erybody, who're running around all year like we are. We ended up making good friends with bands who put us up when we played their town, and they stayed with us when they were in New Orleans." Even on the one year when Dash Rip Rock had to cancel their showcase after the van broke down in South Texas, they made it to Austin in time to play "Mojo's Mayhem" at the Continental on Saturday. "We're kind of a loosey-goosey band, you know. Some shows are better than others," he says. "But we always have pulled it together for SXSW. We know the 'C' game isn't going to cut it." After 29 years of taking care of business onstage, Dash Rip Rock comes to SXSW 2016 to handle business offstage as well. After a decade on Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles, the band is promoting the LP Wrongheaded on their own Drag Snake label. "We'll be on our best behavior in meet- ings, but onstage the mindset will be the same as always: we want to DESTROY!"
