He spoke at SXSW Interactive and Film several times, including a 2014 interview with Eli Pariser of Upworthy, which covered the merits of machine-curated content. He was also part of The New York Times documentary Page One, featured at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival. Given how much influence he had on the community of creatives that comes to Austin in March, SXSW will launch the David Carr Prize for Emerging Writers at SXSW for 2016. All journalists, writers and weekend bloggers were invited to honor Carr's interest in the convergence of new media, technology and culture by entering an essay in the debut competition during the entry period in December and January. The topic for these essays centers on what is exciting (or unnerving) about life in the coming years. The author of the winning essay will be honored at the SXSW Interactive Innovation Awards on Tuesday evening, March 15. Top essays from the competition will be published on the SXSW website.
