SXSW 2018 Stage Manager Handbook 11 BACKLINE SXSW does not provide or pay for backline. The artists are responsible for arranging their own backline. • Here are some options for how that can happen: - Bringing their own - Sharing backline with other bands on the showcase - Renting backline from a local company - Presenter provides backline - Your venue has backline available to rent - Any combination of the above • Here are the questions to ask your bands: - Are they planning to bring backline? If so, please list. - If they are bringing backline are they willing to share with other artists on the showcase? - If they are willing to share, ask if you can share their contact info with the other bands on the showcase in need of backline. • If several of the bands need to rent backline: - Your APM will provide you with a list of backline companies to refer your artists to. - Put the artists in touch with each other and help them create a master list of gear that is needed. - Backline companies will not hold gear without a credit card, so one of the artists will have to provide a credit card. - Whoever it is that provided the credit card for the rental needs to be at the venue when the gear is delivered to make sure it is all accounted for and in working order. • If the presenter is providing backline: - Give the presenter the list of backline needs of your artists. - You and your APM will provided them the best backline companies based on the artist's gear needs. Please make it clear that all liability for damages is the responsibility of the artists. Helpful tips: • Encourage as much sharing of backline between bands as possible. This will really help make set changes faster and more efficient. • Please keep the SXSW Staff informed of the backline arrangements by completing the "Backline" section in the SM Advancement Tool. • The Stage Manager should NEVER provide their personal credit card as payment for backline.
