Saturday-Sunday, March 19-20 ARRIVING IN AUSTIN AND DISCOVERING THAT OUR MUSICAL EQUIPMENT HAD BEEN TURNED BACK AT CUSTOMS was not the greatest start to our SXSW adventure. We spent the next day and a half scram- bling around trying to fi nd everything we needed. This included getting new CDs pressed and lining up at Rock N Roll Rentals at 3am in the cold, where, we even scored another show! Our fi rst gig at Emo's was a mix of adrenalin, tiredness and Odd Future at Buffalo Billiards. relief. We played our hearts out, became fi rm friends with a band called Thomas Wynn and the Believers, and converted a crowd that had never heard of this little band from Melbourne, Australia. – Kelly (The Vaudeville Smash) FOR A LIFE LONG MUSIC JUNKIE, SXSW was a surreal but extraordinary experi- ence, especially for a fi rst timer like me. I have never experienced as much good music (and even better vibes) in one place. Austin is a beautiful city and the locals are unbelievably friendly. Some people actually smiled at me while walking down the street, which was really nice, but a bit of a shocker for a New Yorker. My only complaint is that there was just not enough time to see all of the amazing artists and bands that played this year. Hands down, this is the best music festival I have ever attended! – Gary Ford (Discovery Communications) WALKING NORTH ON CONGRESS AT 8PM ON WEDNESDAY, I accidentally went east on 5th instead of 6th and passing Nuvola heard a sound that sounded familiar and wonderful. I went in and saw Davila 666 from Puerto Rico, fi ve young guys jumping around shouting out songs in Spanish that were punctu- ated with "Hey-Hey-Heys" that sounded like the Ramones in sound and spirit but not the look! I was as excited as the fi rst time I saw the Ramones because it was equally grand and equally unexpected. My jaw dropped, my grin turned to laughter and tears sprung to my eyes seeing them carry the torch of Johnny/ Joey/Dee Dee/Tommy. What typical SXSW whimsy - stumble into a show not on your schedule and walk out exhausted with joy. Hey! Hey! Hey!!! – Art Fein (Another Fein Mess) "Women in the Recording Studio" panel (from left) Emily Wright, Trina Shoemaker, Ann Mincieli, Terri Winston (not pictured: Sylvia Massy). Big K.R.I.T. at Buffalo Billiards. Director Max Winkler, producers Darlene Caamano Loquet and Matt Spicer, and actor Michael Angaran at the screening of Ceremony. Little Dragon at Lustre Pearl. Eliza Doolittle at Cedar Street Courtyard. Jimmy Kimmel, Billy Bob Thornton, and Ray Benson at The King of Luck. Sunday Dance Off at Emo's. 38 SXSW ORLD / M AY 2010 JONATHAN LACHANCE HUTTON SUSPANCIC BRONSON DORSEY ALLIX FROMBERG MARY SLEDD LARA FORDE JEANNE WILKINSON HUTTON SUSPANCIC
