Temple Grandin is a Professor of Livestock Behavior & Welfare at Colorado State University. She is also a best-selling author, autism activist and
consultant to the livestock industry on animal behavior. In the 2010 TIME 100 list of the 100 most influential people in the world, she was named
in the "Heroes" category. Her SXSWedu Keynote presentation on Monday, March 7 was titled "Helping Different Kinds of Minds Solve Problems."
Educators need to help the students who think
differently to be successful. I am concerned that
many creative talented individuals are being totally
stymied by rigid educational requirements. All my
thoughts are in pictures, which was a great asset for
my work designing facilities for the livestock industry.
If I was a student today, I would have been totally
blocked by the algebra requirement. The world needs
all the different kinds of minds to solve problems.
