Iggy was wearing tight pants and a star-spangled red- white-and-blue sequined vest I'd seen hanging in the Driskill gift shop earlier that day. He had a towel over his head like a boxer heading into the ring. When he got into the backstage pen, he went totally nuts. He ran around like a maniac, high-fiving, kissing girls, wav- ing his vest in the air and generally giving a hell of a show to the backstage crowd that wouldn't be able to see the concert. I made my way to the stage and took my place by the speaker stack. Iggy bounded onto the other side of the stage like a dervish, spending a solid five minutes whipping the crowd into a frenzy before the band had played a note. I wish I could say I remember what song they played first, but I can't. I did notice that Iggy always sang to one person at a time, whether it was some- one onstage with him or a fan in the front rows. Next, the band went into one of my favorite songs, the Stooges' "No Fun." About halfway through, Iggy spun around, charged me, and screamed "NO FUUUUN!" into my face from about two feet. I'd like to say it was one of the great moments of my life, and was pretty cool in retro- spect, but frankly, it scared the living shit out of me. Iggy spent a good deal of his time on his belly leaning over the lip of the stage half-swallowed by the crowd. When he was up and running, he was joined by a constant stream of fans who generally stayed onstage clowning around for a few seconds before hopping back into the crowd, some- times with the gentle assistance of the Italians. Occasional- ly a woman just had to give Iggy a kiss, which he cheerfully accepted. One enterprising young man jumped onstage, slung one arm around Iggy's neck, held a camera in front of them with the other, and snapped a picture, in the middle of "Lust For Life." After the show, the band and crew went back to the dress- ing room. Iggy had a commitment to have a drink with a good friend of his sister's who lived in Austin. She turned up, a very straight looking middle-aged woman, and Iggy got ready to go. Then he remembered something. "Hey, anybody got a mirror? Somebody told me I messed up my face." One was produced and he took a quick look. "That ain't too bad" he said. Then he slipped on a sports coat, pulled his hair back in a ponytail, put on his glasses, and Jim Osterberg walked out into the night. - Written by Steve Chaney T O C E L E B R AT E S X S W ' S 3 0 T H Y E A R , U P C O M I N G S XSWo r l d I S S U E S W I L L R E M E M B E R S O M E O F E V E N T S F R O M S X S W ' S PA S T.
