In the space of one block, I saw punks, goths, rappers, rockers, rastas, death metallers, cowboys, pirates, nerds and clowns all walking happily about in search of their respective music. The highlight of the week was a midnight visit to Willie Nelson's ranch, where we were invited by our friend, his daughter Amy. We walked around Willie's haunted cowboy town by the light of a full moon. It was highly surreal. - Reg Mombassa (showcasing artist Dog Trumpet: Sydney, Australia) W e are so honored to have had Rubber Soul's world premiere at SXSW 2014. All three of our screenings were staffed with amazing volunteers and hosted by super-cool venues, each one showing a different side of Austin. - Jon Lefkovitz (Director, Rubber Soul) A s board member of the Paard van Troje con- cert hall in The Hague, my interest in SXSW was triggered by the hall staff's enthusiastic stories. I thought that with more than 2,000 showcases at 100 venues, SXSW should be paradise for music fans. Austin turned out to be a city that (this is a Dutch expression) "breathes" music. Because we prepared a tight schedule and had two bikes, my brother-in-law Hugo and I were able to see about 30 bands during the day and 30 bands at night. After my return in the Netherlands, I kept on dreaming about SXSW for more than two weeks. All in all, SXSW was paradisiacal. - Bas Knol (The Hague, Netherlands) A lot gets said about Elvis Presley's melding of his father's hillbilly heritage, and the music he heard hanging out in gospel churches while daddy did prison time for passing bad checks. But Elvis was actually a TRIPLE threat. His mama Gladys was a southern lady with a Jewish heritage. I was thinking about all of this as I watched the Haden Triplets (siblings with a patchwork pedigree not unlike Elvis') perform at the St. David's church.
