ROBERT TOBIANSKY My favorite memory was being able to see Pusha T perform live for the fi rst time. The great thing about SXSW is that it allows you to see artists that you may not get a chance to see because they don't tour in your city, state, or region. - Victor Jackson (Presenter: ThaFixx) --Dear Leo, (pronounced Lay-o) You have 12 words in English, and two of them are "Depeche Mode". I understand how you've waited "awll dhey" in this line to see your absolute favorite band play. It's ok that the artist wristband they gave you and your Venezuelan bandmates can't help you here. RICHARD MCBLANE Andrew W. K. at the Clive Bar, presented by Filter on Rainey Street. ANNA SPYSZ You look wiped out and anxious, like a cute Rasputin. You've got a guitar hoisted over one shoulder and your backpack on the other, plus a camera case with a huge lens dangling from your skinny neck. You strain to hear the directions the officious door dude is repeating. NO DETACHABLE LENSES. You watch the conversation I have with him. You look confused, but even more so when the guy won't engage with you at all. This is when you break, turning to me emphatic, stumbling to explain how long you've been waiting and looking intently at me, some middle-aged chick who can take or leave this band. I hand you my coveted paper ticket and begin to peel off the special, extra, required-for-entry wristband. We affi x it to your sweaty wrist so it looks like it was put there by the line czar. Don't doubt me. I'm a Texan. Walk up to that door like you're one too, kid. Laura Mvula at Hype Hotel Chelsea Light Moving performs at the Ground Control Touring showcase at Mohawk Patio. S E A N M AT H I S / G E T T Y I M A G E S H E AT H E R K E N N E D Y / G E T T Y I M A G E S After midnight, I'm outside of Antone's and the message arrives; "SOME KID HERE SAYS YOU'VE GOT HIS CAMERA". When we connect at my car just a few minutes later, you grab me in an awkward, joyous hug. "I luff you" you say and tell me your name ("pronounced LAY-O ..."). This is your first time at SXSW, in Austin, in the U.S. You thought the show was amazing and your eyes are as bright as RIkki Tikki Tavi's. You want a picture of us together. I give you back your camera. - Kris Kovach (Austin, Texas) Syrian star Omar Souleyman at the Our Hearts Bleed for Syria Showcase at the Long Center for the Performing Arts. MAURICIO LUJAN NAM CHAU They won't let you in with the lens? Here, give it to me. The guitar and backpack, too. You'll enjoy the show more if … but I see I've lost you. Ok, so look; I'm parked at Third and Congress. See? Right here on Google maps. Take my number. Oh-- you've got no phone? I'll write the number down. Just fi nd another Texan to text me when your show ends. Yes. Honestly; your stuff will be safe in my trunk just a few blocks away. I promise. Kendrick Lamar at the Mass Appeal Presents: ICE CREAM showcase at Austin Music Hall. Natalie Maines at Central Presbyterian Church Singers Judith Hill (l) and Darlene Love (r), with director Morgan Neville at the screening of Twenty Feet from Stardom.
