SATURDAY MARCH 20 IT WAS A VERY UNUSUAL SXSW for the Memphis Music Foundation team this year. On one hand, there were our usual amazing events: a sold out showcase at the Dirty Dog on Thursday, featuring some of Memphis' best in 8 Ball + MJG, Hill Country Revue, Lord T + Eloise, Cory Branan, Star & Micey and Harlan T. Bobo. Memphis music was performed daily at our trade show booth, and street teams worked everyday to promote our city's artists, but on the other hand, there was the devastating news of the death of our Alex Chilton on Wednesday night. Big Star had been due at our booth on Friday to promote their Saturday night show. But what an amazing thing this tragedy turned into. Attendees from around the world stopped by the Memphis booth to pay their respects to Alex Chilton, and we became the place to check on the latest on the Big Star panel on Saturday or what was happening with the tribute concert on Saturday night. It was inspiring to see the effect that Alex and Big Star had over the years on differnet generations of musicians, and the SXSW community wanted to let us know how much they were appreciated, and how much Alex will be missed. Protagonists included Allan McGowan, Ruud Berends and the VIP Crew. - Chris Prosser, IQ/International Live Music Conference (London, UK) OUR EXPERIENCE AT THE Artist Village during SXSW was absolutely fantastic! Shortly after discovering the free food and drinks, we quickly made it a mandatory daily stop in our SXSW schedule. It was a perfect way to spend downtime between daytime panels and shows and the nighttime shows – eating and drinking on a green field with great weather and surrounded by fellow artists.
