First Time for Everything It's the 25th year of SXSW, and we are presenting 11 special showcases on Tuesday night (March 15) to celebrate the convergence of Music and Film/ Interactive trade shows into one big event and offer adding programming to appeal to representatives of all three. SXSW MUSIC News + Notes Latin Music Legends Stamp Series to be Unveiled at SXSW On Wednesday at 10am, the Dot Com Day Stage (in Ballroom G on the 4th Floor of the Austin Convention Center) will host the U.S. Postal Service's unveiling of its new series of postage stamps featuring legendary fi gures in Latin music. Come and see the series of fi v e stamps, fea- turing Celia Cruz, Carlos Gardel, Carmen Miranda, Tito Puente, and Selena. Gear Alley is the Place to Be We are bringing you some innovative programming in the Gear Alley Expo this year. In addition to dis- plays and demos of guitars, amps, DJ gear and more, Steve Jones from KROQ's Jonesy's Jukebox (and, yes, the Sex Pistols) will be interviewing SXSW artists in a shiny airstream trailer studio. Plus, enjoy daily DJ sets and demos beginning at 1pm each day, and Speed Sets by SXSW showcasing bands, curated by Team Clermont, Sounds Australia and the New Zealand Music Commission. It all goes on Wednesday, March 16 through Saturday, March 19 in Exhibit Hall 2 on Level 1 of the Austin Convention Center. 28 For our fi lm fans, guitarist Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart Band) will present Spanish Dracula, a classic silent fi l m for which he will provide an all new, live solo guitar soundtrack. The show will take place at Central Presbyterian Church(200 E. 8th St.) and will be opened by Houston's Two Star Symphony and Norway's Serpentine. Bituaya Plus, Flamingo Cantina (515 E. 6th St.) will host an entire night of Nerdcore hip-hop. ONErpm will host a cool night of Latin acts at the Speakeasy (412 Congress Ave.). Meanwhile, Pitchfork is presenting shows at both Emo's and Emo's Jr (603 Red River St.) on the fi rst ever Tuesday night at SXSW Music. Surfer Blood Sweden at SXSW 2011 The Soundtrack of Our Lives This year, SXSW will host a stellar lineup of bands from Sweden, a nation known for producing great bands. This year Sweden's SXSW high- caliber musical presence encompasses everything from rock to pop to electronic to folk to metal. The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Van Rivers, The Sounds, The Refreshments, Those Dancing Days and Bult are just a few of the top notch names headed to Austin. Don't miss the Swedish booth located in the SXSW Trade Show at the Austin Convention Center, where you can fi nd the best new Swedish music and, according to our contact at Music Export Sweden, "a lot of other crazy stuff." Carver Museum Hosts SXSW Events SXSW Music is happy to announce three days and three nights of events happening at the Carver Museum & Cultural Center (1165 Angelina St.). All of the events are free and open to the public, with no badges or wristbands required. This historic building on Austin's East Side has been home to our highly suc- cessful gospel and holy hip-hop shows for the past two years, and we are excited to welcome Much Luvv Records and The Circle of Infl uence back to SXSW to present this year's shows. Levites In addition to the gospel and holy hip-hop, there will be several fi lms screened, including Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone, Furious Force of Rhymes, Black August, The Revival SXSW and a special preview/discussion of the documentary Punk in Africa. And that's not all! There also will be a special panel called "Industry Survival Skills," hosted by Kevin Beacham, one of the founders of the Skribble Jam, Rhymesayers and Fifth Element Online. This panel will happen on Thursday afternoon, March 17, and is open to the public. SXSW ORLD / M ARCH F ILM- I A 201 1 Vans returns to SXSW Every year, the Vans showcase at Emo's seems to get more and more fun. Who remem- bers the line that extended WAY down 6th Street last year when Nas & Damien Marley were set to hit the stage? This year, Vans is working to outdo itself, bringing you sets from Talib Kweli, Off!, The Black Lips, The Stripminers and more. Check it out at Emo's Main Room on Wednesday night.
