SXSW Alumni Austin City Limits Tapings SXSW MUSIC News + Notes Tuesday Music Shows A Great Success This year, SXSW Music added a handful of shows on Tuesday night. This was a fi rst for SXSW, but will not be the last. The Tuesday night shows highlighted a cross- over between our Music, Film and Interactive Festivals that we knew existed before but had not gotten to see so vividly. Many shows had lines around the block, and many of our bands loved the opportunity to perform for professionals across all three industries. Raphael Saadiq Japan Nite 2011 Elysium had a room full of folks dancing to the upbeat soul from Japan Nite's opening band Zukunasisters. The group sent out brief praise to their people back home who had suffered so much less than a week before, which made the audience soften deeply and wish the best for weeks to come. After that, the band returned to the beats, and the beautiful shaking onstage and offstage started again. Style X Launches 2011 featured the introduction of SXSW's new fashion component. Style X (pronounced "style by") was born as a showcase of three dozen emerging designers from around the country. With two days of pop-up retail in the Austin Convention Center, Style X attracted an estimated 13,000 attendees and shoppers. Attendees discovered some of America's most creative and inspiring young designers representing what is next in accessories, denim, eyewear, jewelry, men's, women's and street wear. They also participated in three insightful panel discussions focusing on the fashion industry and its relationship with music, style and technology, with panelists ranging from an editor for Complex magazine to a winner of Bravo's Project Runway. Plus, visi- tors were treated to four runway shows, each representing a different style segment, with offi cial SXSW performing musicians such as Brooklyn group Asobi Seksu and Texas singer-songwriter Sahara Smith acting as the models. According to Joah Spearman, Style X's Co-Founder & Executive Producer, "We look forward to being back in 2012, bigger and better!" All Aboard For the Railroad Revival Tour SXSW alumni Old Crow Medicine Show, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Mumford & Sons recently embarked on a six stop U.S. tour traveling in vintage railroad cars. Band collaborations, new material and guest musicians were highlights throughout the Railroad Revival Tour. The Austin stop saw the Austin High School marching band join Mumford & Sons onstage for "The Cave." Be on the lookout for audio recordings and video footage of these stellar musicians on their grand adventure. 12 SXSW ORLD / M AY – J UNE 201 1 We are ecstatic about Austin's brand new live music destination, the Moody Theater at ACL Live. Featuring multiple levels of seating with excellent vantage points from every seat, fi rst-rate acoustics and a large, open stage plan, the new home of the legendary Austin City Limits television show is a regal and stately place befi tting the Live Music Capital of the World. The lineup over the coming months includes plenty of SXSW alumni who will fi rst grace that stage, and later your television screens, as part of the new ACL season. Featured acts will include Raphael Saadiq, who has torn up the SXSW stage for two years in a row with his soulful funk. Adele, the hottest voice in music at the moment, is scheduled to do a taping in June. Rockers Florence & The Machine made quite a splash at their fi rst SXSW performance and will take part in another coming taping. And local Austin stalwart Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears (who opened Lost Highway's 10th Anniversary show at the same venue during SXSW) will record a show with special guests, The Relatives, a classic gospel group from North Texas.
