Add These International Music Events to Your SXSW 2012 Schedule Notes News & SXSW Remembers Biff Parker Looking Forward to SXSW 2010! Sadly, SXSW 2012 will take place this year without one of our most beloved colleagues, Biff Parker (aka Steven Stelmach), who passed away unexpectedly in October 2011. An Austin-native, Parker started at SXSW in 1989 and worked as our Community Liaison, a role in which he developed and nurtured the relationships with city offi cials, the Austin Police and Fire Departments, and downtown business leaders that have been vital to SXSW's con- tinued success and growth. SXSW staff miss the tireless work ethic and resourcefulness he devoted to his job, as well as his kindness, fashion sense and singular sense of humor. Beginning at noon on Saturday, March 17, Sounds Australia will host another marathon showcase and Aussie BBQ. Almost 30 Australian artists of a variety of genres will commandeer all three Maggie Mae's stages to perform at this mega day party. That same night, the party will transition directly into a 14-band dual-stage offi cial showcase featuring the top Australian talent attending SXSW this year. Planet Quebec returns to SXSW, featuring fi ve nights of the top Quebecois bands, as well as four days of parties, mixers and daytime per- formances. Participating this year will be M for Montreal, one of the fastest growing industry conference/music festivals in North America; the venerable Montreal International Jazz Festival; and Quebec-based label/management/marketing juggernaut Dare To Care. Stop by early Friday evening to try poutine, an addicting combination of french fries, hot gravy and cheese curds. Goes great with cold beer, non? Diamond Rings Art vs Science More Indie Label Showcases Announced Carpark/Paw Tracks Records return to SXSW to showcase a variety of new and established acts. Though no stranger to SXSW, Class Actress is newly signed to Carpark Records, and will be joined by other SXSW vet- erans Ear Pwr, Dent May, Young Magic, Cloud Nothings and Price Rama at the showcase. Prince Rama With releases by the Dum Dum Girls and label founder Mike Sniper's own musical endeavor Blank Dogs, Brooklyn's Captured Tracks became a label to watch soon after it was launched in 2008. Four years and more than 100 releases later, Captured Tracks will make its SXSW showcase debut with label mainstays Beach Fossils, Soft Metals and Craft Spells, as well as exciting newer acts such as Blouse, Widowspeak and The Jameses. Trae tha Truth Soft Metal Hip-Hop Spans the Nation and Globe at SXSW SXSW 2012 is poised to be THE place to see what's happening in the hip-hop world. Featuring the legends of the east coast, players in the dirty south, the west coast champions of funk and everyone in between, the list of artists also includes such emerging stars as Action Bronson, A$AP Rocky, Snow da Product and Trae tha Truth, not to mention international artists from all over Africa, Europe and the Pacifi c Rim. Media outlets like BET, Vibe and XXL will also return to present offi cial showcases to help ensure that you don't miss a rhyme. Check Out These SXSW Music Conference Sessions Friday, March 16 Digitalmusic.org, the virtual home of music business association NARM's digital initiatives, will present several sessions from its "Music Start Up Academy" curriculum on Wednesday, March 14. And don't forget to stay tuned to sxsw.com/music for upcoming information about the many great panels taking place during the SXSW Music Conference. Announced sessions include: Biff Parker at work during SXSW Wednesday, March 14 "Social Music Strategies: Viral & the Power of Free" Eliot Van Buskirk leads a discussion of the integration of music into social media platforms, and how a "free- mium" system can benefi t artists.
