But Chilton died just a couple days before the newest incarnation of Big Star (Chilton, Stephens and two Posies) was to appear at SXSW in 2010. McCarthy and DeNicola had already planned to come to Austin to shoot the Big Star panel even if Chilton wouldn't allow the band's set to be fi lmed. When that show instead became a Chilton tribute, DeNicola was able to hire the four-man camera crew already there to fi lm Dwight Twilley's set; they captured the entire, emotion-wracked homage. Stamey was also there, speaking to Big Star devotee musicians about his idea to present Th ird/Sister Lovers live with a core rock band and cadre of lead singers, as well as a brass, wind and strings orchestra playing arrangements by Carl Marsh, who had written the original album's arrangements, which had been lost. If the fi rst two Big Star albums sound like they should have been as commercially accessible as the band intended, the third represents Chilton's bleak reaction to the whole experience. You can hear his characteristic yearning now overwhelmed (though not eliminated entirely) by a druggy, slo-mo dis- integration into a disturbed and disturbing state far too naked and raw to be embraced by most fans. But its power and glory has not stopped increasing since a British label fi nally released it in 1978. Especially for like-minded Southern pop guys like Stamey, whose dream show has been presented in North Carolina and Manhattan prior to coming to SXSW, and will also go to London and Barcelona later this year. "So I wanted to focus on the particular time when the guys involved in Big Star records—including Chris Bell (who died in 1978)—were expanding the boundaries of what they could do." In doing so, his project, along with Nothing Can Stop Me, brings a kind of salvation to the beautiful mess that was the life and times of Big Star. ■ Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me (Work-in-Progress) will be shown tonight (Thurs- day, March 15) at The Paramount Theatre (713 Congress Ave) at 7pm.
