SXSW GUIDEBOOK 2017 8 6 SXSW FESTIVALS SUNDAY, MARCH 12, 2017 | 7:55 SHARP AUSTIN MUSIC AWARDS THIS YEAR'S ALL-STAR SETS AT THE AUSTIN MUSIC AWARDS INCLUDE: An opening blessing and performance by the New Generation Children's Choir. A Femmes for SIMS set focused on Austin women in music featuring the Trishas, Kelly Willis, Erika Wennerstrom, the Bluebonnets, Jackie Venson, Carolyn Wonderland, and LouLou (of Thievery Corporation and Night Glitter). Fab 5 Freddy presenting a one-of-a-kind collaboration with Grammy winners Grupo Fantasma, featuring Jai Malano, Brownout, and Sabrina Ellis (of Sweet Spirit and A Giant Dog). A Texas songwriters set performed by Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, Kat Edmonson, and others. The first-ever Townes Van Zandt Award will be presented to musician and artist Terry Allen, who will perform with Joe Ely and other special guests. Performances come backed by Austin Music Awards Musical Director Charlie Sexton and Mayor Adler's House Band – Michael Ramos, Conrad Choucroun, and George Reiff. "Casting about for an overall knockout concert this first year at the Moody Theater, our motley little brain trust – Louis Black, Charlie Sexton, Celeste Quesada, Kevin Curtin, and myself – knew exactly one thing: We wanted to honor Terry Allen and Texas songwriters," reveals longtime Chronicle Music Editor Raoul Hernandez. "From there, it all fell into place. Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, Kat Edmonson, Kelly Willis, Joe Ely, the Trishas, and more all hopped aboard the AMA train no problem. "Hip-hop pioneer Fab 5 Freddy, Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, Jai Malano – the list just goes on. Marking 35 years in one night, a sole show and an awards ceremony at that, will be intense. Austin abides!" Also receiving a special award this year is Rose Reyes, honoree of the Margaret Moser Award celebrating a trailblazer in the music industry. KUTX hosts Laurie Gallardo and Rick McNulty return as hosts for the Austin Music Awards.
