SXSW Head Leads David Bowie Street Renaming Effort David Bowie was a true musical titan, leading and influencing musical styles and trends for 50 years. His remarkable career, which also included numerous acting roles for both stage and film, ultimately culminated in the release of his final album, Blackstar, just two days before his death on January 10, at age 69. Needless to say, Bowie was an inspiration for SXSW, so fittingly (and seemingly coincidentally), a couple of days after his passing, the street sign outside of SXSW's offices was mysteriously changed from "Bowie St" to "David Bowie St." After a few days of speculation, Roland Swenson, SXSW Managing Director, stepped forward as co-conspirator in the sign switch, writing in a state- ment of admission: "David Bowie was an important part of my life when I was growing up in the '70s. It was a dream of mine that some day, we would have David Bowie as SXSW keynote, and I fanta- sized that if it happened, we would ask the City to temporarily rename Bowie Street, where our office is located, to David Bowie Street, in his honor. When we heard the news that he was releasing a new album, we redoubled our efforts to book him. After [Bowie] passed away this week, I thought to myself 'We'll never have Bowie at SXSW, but we can still have David Bowie St.' " Though the city of Austin plans to remove the adhesive "David Bowie St" sign, Swenson and others are leading a formal grassroots effort to make the change permanent as a lasting monu- ment to Bowie's impact on both Austin's music community and SXSW. A rally in favor of the name change was held on Sunday, January 17, and at press time, an online petition through Change.org had received close to 6,000 signatures.
