And his path was that he raised a little money, and he made a movie that was kind of out of the soup of his life. So I feel great about the opportunity to speak in front of a large group of people about our path; I really believe in it. " It has also, as Mark notes, been a long journey from when both brothers would volunteer "for the free badges," as Mark notes, to their current successes. "It's incredible. We always have one crazy moment every year where we get sucked back through the wormhole to who we were in Austin; I mean, with The Puff y Chair, I was out in the street getting tickets to people, and I looked back and Jay was in the street, and The Puff y Chair on the marquee at the Paramount. And I almost broke into tears, because this is where we've been coming our whole lives to see films and worship filmmakers, and my and my brother's movie is there." Considering both their and SXSW's roots in Austin, I close by asking, only half-seriously, if the Duplasses relate to SXSW the same way Wooderson, as played by Matthew McConaughey, spoke of "high school girls" in Linklater's Dazed and Confused, where they get older and the festival stays roughly the same. Jay laughs: "I have a hard time acknowledging our own age sometimes in relation to that Wooderson quality. I look at 25-year-old filmmakers and I think 'Oh, that's us.' Then I look in the mirror at the grey hairs and the bags under the eyes ... and I think 'That's not us.'
