Longtime SXSW participator and media leader for the millennial subculturalists, VICE debuted its halfhour long news segment on HBO in April. Available to the U.S. and Canada through VEVO.com, mobile apps and Xbox 360 and Roku, VEVO TV aims to bring viewers curated blocks of music videos, live concert footage, artist interviews and original music-based programs, streaming 24/7. Stressing the fact that the playlists are "programmed by humans," harkening back to the original MTV, VEVO TV has its sights set on eventual expansion to cable television providers. Congratulations to Music Accelerator Winner - ROLI London's "design-led technology startup" ROLI participated in this year's Music Gear Expo and the Pandora Discovery Den, and also debuted its state-of-the-art Seaboard at the Music Accelerator, eventually taking home the top prize. According to ROLI, the Seaboard is "a new musical instrument which bridges the gap between acoustic and digital music by putting the control of pitch, volume and timbre right at your fingertips." The folks at ROLI impressed all this year at SXSW with an innovation that truly represents the convergence of technology, music and design. Pre-orders for the Seaboard opened in April. Congratulations! JEN BERTRAND Black Violin performed the prelude music for this year's Music Keynote speaker, Dave Grohl. The band had the audience on its feet with its special blend of classical, hip-hop and rock, and the performance prompted The Independent to name it one of the five best new bands of SXSW 2013. Black Violin's new album, Classically Trained, is due out on May 7. Austra at VICELAND JOSEPH A SIMS This year's Artist Central room was abuzz with musician-focused sessions and worldclass workshops. Renowned songwriter Richard Thompson illuminated his writing process in a workshop on Friday, followed by Slipknot/Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor, who discussed the art of making (and learning from) mistakes as a musician. Steely Dan/Doobie Brothers guitar master Jeff "Skunk" Baxter blew minds with a guitar and theoretical physics clinic. Perennial favorite Martin Atkins and Jenny Owen Youngs discussed the successes and pitfalls of Kickstarter. From digital management to studio tips to screen printing your own t-shirts, Artist Central ran the gamut, and you can expect even more in 2014. 12 JIM CHAPIN VICE takes on HBO PanelPicker Available This Summer Jordan Rudess of Dream Theatre demos the ROLI Seaboard
