1 8 SXS W O R L D | M A R C H 8 , 2 0 1 8 | SXSW.COM IN BRIEF Place By Design Finalists Part of the Cities Summit, Place by Design recognizes the visionary ways designers are rethinking public spaces. The six finalists for 2018 are: DRYVER - A robot that provides free water. Adressaparken - A park in Trondheim, Norway, that allows artists and designers space to experiment. The Hangout - A formerly vacant lot in New Orleans transformed into a sensory playground. SPACEBUSTER: We Like America - A mobile research center that turns underutilized lots into collaborative centers. Public Recreation - A modular fitness hub that democratizes activity and wellness. LuminoCITY - An activation that uses immersive art to guide people around downtown Detroit. Hear them pitch on Tuesday, March 13 at 12:30pm in Ballroom CD at the Four Seasons (98 San Jacinto Blvd). News & Journalism Media companies have been struggling to answer whether audiences are more interested in reading an article or watching a video. Join Evan Williams of Medium and Cory Haik of Mic as they debate what the future of news will look like in "War on Platforms: Is the Medium Still the Message?" Peter Kaa of Vox will moderate. Learn from experts about what makes a podcast thrive in "What Podcasts Eat for Dinner: How to Feed a Show." Julie Shapiro of PRX will guide you, along with WNYC's Kathy Tu, Lelia Day, executive producer of The Stoop podcast, and Wendy Zukerman, host of Science Vs. from Gimlet Media. Startup & Tech Sectors In 1975, Ray Dalio started his investment management firm, Bridgewater Associates, in his two-bedroom apartment and has since built it into the fifth most important private company in the U.S., making him one of the 100 richest people in the world in the process with a net worth of some $17 billion. Hear him discuss his idea for "a believability-weighted idea meritocracy" in "How to Build a Company Where the Best Ideas Win Out." Design The SXSW Design track is full of stories. Scott Berinato of the Harvard Business Review will argue for dataviz literacy in "Facts, Truth and Data Visualization," while the storytelling wizards of thepudding.cool join fellow data lovers from Datawheel and Viacom for "Data-Driven Storytelling: Perspectives and Paradigms." As fans of Carl Sagan and the Voyager know, arts and science are fundamen- tally intertwined. This is why the governing bodies of CERN established an artist in residency program at one of the world's most advanced laboratories. "Decrypting the Universe: Science and Art at CERN" brings together James Beacham, a particle physicist who works with CERN's large hadron collider, and artist Laura Couto Rosado to discuss Rosado's residency at CERN. Workplace Two Workplace track sessions will examine the issues surrounding job security in the face of automation. Explore what skills will be in higher demand and which jobs may disappear in "Augmented Reality: Job Killer or Economic Savior?" and learn how artificial intelligence is changing our daily workflow in "Sci-Fi to Reality: Evolution of AI in the Workplace."
